One Life Changed
When I met Sheila about 10 years ago, we quickly became friends. Shelia is a warm, kind, compassionate person who absolutely loves God. She is also a single mom, raising 10 children and her grandchildren. Sheila has such a heart for her family- her desire is to provide a safe place for them to live and support them as they each grow into adults who will make a difference in this world. After we launched Greenhouse, Sheila would periodically come to our Sunday Fellowships. At times, it was difficult to attend because she did not own a car, so we would give her and her children a ride.
One night during Fellowship when we had opened the floor to prayer requests, Sheila asked us to pray for a car. She stated it was very difficult for her to get to appointments, take her kids to school, and go grocery shopping without a car. Sometimes she would take the bus, but normally that involved more than one bus and some walking, which can be challenging with children. She stated she often didn’t have the extra funds to use a ride-sharing app, let alone purchase a car.
After a few weeks of prayer, an individual reached out to Greenhouse Project to be a donor. I will never forget our conversation. He told me he had a recently fixed-up car that he wanted to donate to someone who could use it. Immediately I thought of Sheila! He went on to say that his shop would not only donate this car, but also pay for the title transfer fee and continue to pay for all of the maintenance the car would need over time. I was floored at his generosity and God’s faithfulness.
A few weeks later we were able to get Sheila connected with the donor and the car in her possession. Check out the picture! She was so happy and her kids were excited as well. Receiving the car had an immediate and long-term impact on both Sheila and her family's life.
On May 24th, I received a horrifying call. Shelia informed me there was a shooting on her street and her car was hit with stray bullets, breaking the windows and causing damage to the body of the car. Even some of her neighbors’ houses were hit with bullets. Thank God no one was injured. All of this happened two blocks away from the Greenhouse Project where Emily and I live. Our gracious donor offered to pick the car himself and help with the repairs. Please keep praying for Sheila. Not knowing if you are safe in your home and community can cause fear, depression, and anxiety.
Oftentimes, we struggle to think of ways that we can help others with what we have, especially if we feel our own resources are limited. Every ride that Shelia received prior to being gifted a car made an impact on her life. Consider asking God to show you how He can use you to bless someone today.
