A good friend recently said something that caught my attention, “ Hey John, you have had more time clean than in addiction”, he then added, “can you still remember what addiction is like?”

Greenhouse Recovery isn’t something completely new. This is a continuation of a nonprofit organization that has been around for almost twenty years.

Lukas has been walking a very difficult road. Can you imagine being hundreds of miles away from your home? Losing everything you know, friends, family, relationships and possessions due to drug and alcohol addiction?

This is so cool, three of our Homework club students, all middle schoolers, were shoveling snow outside our building during the snowstorm we had a week and a half ago. I love seeing the entrepreneurial skills coupled with hard work!

I was alone in the house and I heard the smoke detector and the house was already engulfed. I had about two minutes, it happened so fast.

For the most part I’ve been the face of Greenhouse Project. But I’m just one of the many people who has done so much to get this ministry up and running. But there is someone in particular who does so much for the Greenhouse Project behind the scenes.

Recovery stories are not always linear. Malik came to us this fall to explore his faith. He had been an alcoholic and had been through rehab and had been clean for about 10 months.

What if we could bring a Christmas Miracle to our Homework Club kids and their families this year? We think it’s pretty awesome, and we pray we can do it!

Another tragedy for our Community. Monday December 4th may have started as a normal day, but it ended in tragedy. Just two blocks away, on 21st and Edgemont, a woman was fatally shot. The news said 25 bullet casing were found.

It was one of the first really cold, windy days this fall and people were bundled up in a long line outside 44House headquarters, expectant for practical provision of food with holiday cheer.

“I had never even heard of Chester. I didn’t know the challenges people face there or that it is one of the most dangerous cities in Pennsylvania and even in the United States.”

Charles was orphaned at only two years old and raised in an especially bad area in Philly. His life was full of depression and dependency on drugs.

Recently I’ve been experiencing discouragement. This has been a very busy season for Greenhouse Project and several things are not “going right.” Our funding is running low…

Several years ago I got a call about a man who was living in a garage. He was only six years old when he started smoking and nine when he started drinking alcohol.

It's odd for us to have a quiet peaceful day, most days are filled with cars whizzing down the street, sounds of sirens from emergency vehicles.

Early on in my life of ministry I would attend large gatherings and speak of events to hundreds or thousands of people. Yet at the end of the day I would go home by myself. Something was missing, and that something was family.

“I needed to find a way to keep structure in my life, have a mentor that could pour into me, and an outlet to serve the Lord…God always finds a way.”

Everything seems to start again in the fall! As summer comes to a close we are so excited to start our full schedule of events and outreach with year 3 of a thriving Homework Club!
