Project MENTOR: Help the Next Person
March 7th, 2020 marked 13 years of freedom from drug addiction through the Power of Jesus Christ. My life changed in a jail cell in 2006, while I was at the lowest point in my life. Those who poured into me asked for nothing in return, except that I help the next struggling person. Through this, God gave me a mission, a vision, and a purpose for life.
I often view those times as the most challenging period in my life. However, I realized that they were simply the most challenging for that time- more challenging days were ahead of me. Every time I come through a difficult season, I am stronger and better equipped for the next challenge life has.
FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS!
Over these past few weeks, God has revealed to me that most of us (myself included) spend most of our time and energy on being distracted. You may be thinking, “Hey John, what are you talking about?” The world we live in is constantly demanding our attention. Distractions can be attractive when we don’t want to address the deep needs in our emotions, heart, and soul. However, they take our eyes off of more important things, like guarding our hearts.
For me, when challenges arise, I always reach back to the days when I pressed through thanks to the strength given to me by the Lord. God gives new power daily through the Holy Spirit. Paul wrote “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me (Philippians 3:12).” No matter what is going on in my world, I continue to lean on the strength and power of Jesus Christ. In this, I'm also relying on wise counsel and looking to lean on other people.
WE ARE NOT MEANT TO BE ALONE.
Recently, Greenhouse Project has been busier than ever providing counseling, coaching, and mentoring services. During the past month, we’ve received calls from people struggling with domestic/martial challenges, deep drug addictions, sexual addictions, and self identity crises. All are serious challenges that we pray and come alongside those struggling. Oftentimes, when we are in a dark place, it is beneficial to have someone not only show us the way out, but walk with us until we find it. No one can thrive alone. Because of this, we believe that both children and adults can benefit from mentors outside of their own family unit to support, encourage, and model a well-balanced life. This is the foundation for Project Mentor.
A mentor is an experienced and trusted adviser. If you look back in your own life, you may think of a few people who fit this description. It probably was someone you could trust and who was involved in your life on a regular basis — probably showing up at your birthdays, ball games, and other special occasions, always there to guide and support you. Or maybe you didn’t have a mentor, but wish that someone would have filled that role for you. We love mentors that are committed to seeing lives change and actually following through with commitments.
No matter where someone is in life, our goal is always to support by connecting people with a mentor. At Greenhouse Project, we seek to be intentional in our day to day lives and aim to not be passive in our interactions with others. Instead, we want to use our lives to impact those around us by being receptive to the direction of God.
By partnering with us, you are investing in the future of someone you may not know or ever meet. As we continue with our mission, we are expecting to see generations of people transformed through Jesus, and the generosity of our supporters.
Thank you SO MUCH for continuing partnering during this difficult time! Also, pray for us as we focus on building relationships and walking life out with those in our communities. In addition, check out our updated website and volunteer needs; we can use your skills to help in long-term transformation.
Finally, remember that while it is important to stay busy, especially during this time, make sure to build in quiet time with God. It is in the still moments that we often hear Him best.
