Recovery Truth Bombs
A friend recently asked this of our recovery process, "What drives success with recovery?" ❤️🩹 We are human, so the answer can be as complicated as we are. But there tends to be some truth bombs that I pray are encouraging.
My own battle with addiction brought me to the foot of the cross where redemption and freedom–through His Word, in community with others–changed my life. The Lord softened my heart for those suffering with addiction and life dominating sin. With the bold assignment to go where the suffering are to live side-by-side with them, our team gets to serve people who are where I was 15 years ago.
Our ministry keeps me accountable *every single day* in my own sobriety! Not a day goes by without a reminder, "Hey, I'm in this too." When we talk about change—we are humbly seeking to become the change. Let’s get into it…
TRUTH BOMB #1 — OWN YOUR STUFF
Personal responsibility opens up the possibility for recovery. Sobriety starts when an addict chooses to take ownership of their situation and commits to making the necessary changes to move forward in a different way. When one comes to understand they are powerless over a life dominating sin like addiction, they can begin to receive help. We believe the possibility for life transformation comes from the place of admitting complete defeat.
TRUTH BOMB #2 — ONLY GOD
The patterns and toxic behaviors in active addiction are enough to make one crazy. Here was a light bulb moment for me in early recovery: God–and only God–can restore me to sanity. Successful recovery is really about a surrendered life to God, asking Him to highlight and remove character defects like sinful obsession and behaviors. Realizing that I am prone to sin, the real solution is to be one with God and live life around serving others (versus myself).
TRUTH BOMB #3 — DON’T GO IT ALONE
Addressing inner character is key. Living a lifestyle of honesty, open mindedness and courage are significant in recovery and walking with Jesus. It looks like listening to others, submitting to God and others who are called to help us. We call them sponsors or spiritual guides. Having support from another person to actively help navigate life’s decisions directly contributes to sobriety success, even more so when it’s a life-long relationship.
TRUTH BOMB #4 — SHARPEN ANOTHER
Accountability is the acceptance of responsibility for one's own actions. It implies a willingness to be transparent, allowing others to observe and evaluate one's performance and upholding a set standard of living.
What’s interesting about the familiar verse in Proverbs 27 is the sharpening comes from friction in the honing process. Meaning, direct abrasive contact with another piece of iron—in a human sense, pain—brings about the desired result. Solomon is trying to paint a picture of how humans grow and thrive through the honing process.
Friends sharpen each other's countenance through relationships. Literally means to “shake face to face” and have real candid conversations about life. We don’t hold back, we are true and honest, and even harsh at times because so much is at stake on the other side of poor decisions.
TRUTH BOMB #5 — STAY CONNECTED
Every person in our discipleship and recovery groups is suggested to have an accountability partner, one to guide them and be real with. They are encouraged to talk daily or a few times a week. This usually means working step work, or practicing Biblical principles, or just spending time with each other.
Recovery is not dependent upon people, but upon one's relationship with God. And God gave us other people to help us become like Jesus. This way we can use our broken, messed up lives to actually help other people!
