I Just Want to Live in a Place That's Clean for My Children, She Said

Our third Community Clean Up was a huge success this past Saturday. Would you describe cleaning up street trash as "fun?” Our volunteers do!

The trash clean up event started last year as a response to what our neighbors wanted. During COVID we spent a lot of time talking and it became clear they felt neglected and unseen. There were trash piles of old furniture and debris scattered throughout our streets. In summertime, the forgotten hot trash is putrid along our sidewalks. One woman said she just wanted to live in a place that was clean for her children.

So we got to work.

Over 22 volunteers came out to help on Saturday, and together with neighbors, we filled two full 30 yard dumpsters in just a few hours. We were able to remove thousands of pounds of trash from our street.

The trash clean up time has become a unifying effort as almost every neighbor steps outside to be involved, even folks we haven’t met yet. It is a unique time where many pitch in and everyone watches the space around us transform and get beautified. Our teams go door to door to pray and share the gospel of Jesus Christ with neighbors. Everyone is so encouraged. All three times, it's been a truly amazing, awe inspiring day.

I love projects like this because it brings our community together. We can inspire people to be involved, but its our neighbors and volunteers who choose to come out and make a difference that make our trash clean up day a success. The impact of Greenhouse Project being active in the community and leading long term change is being felt. Many neighbors see what's happening are are inspired to come alongside. Special thanks to Opdenaker Trash and our donors for the other cleaning supplies.
